Regional differences in the Spanish public sector
The database Regional differences in the Spanish public sector is part of a research project carried out by the BBVA Foundation and the Ivie which has a double objective. First, to generate new fresh information on the public-sector performance in Spain and its regions. Second, to analyze the data obtained in order to gain a more detailed picture of the extent of its performance, the reasons underlying regional differences and their effect on inter-territorial solidarity and economic efficiency.
This database is available on the BBVA Foundations website. Regionalized information covers the period 2000-2008, 2008 being the last year of information available and also when the transfer of public services to the autonomous regions was almost finished.
The database covers the following information:
- Size of the public sector in each territory (percentage and euros per capita):
- Weight of the public sector
- Territorial distribution by levels of government and expenditure items (thousand euros and euros per capita):
- Employee remuneration
- Intermediate consumption and other current expenditure
- Gross capital formation
- Transfers
- Total consolidated expenditure, excluding the funds transferred between the different levels of government
- Territorial distribution by levels of government and expenditure functions (thousand euros and euros per capita):
- Education
- Health
- Social protection
- Transport and communications
- Other functions
- Total consolidated expenditure, excluding the funds transferred between the different levels of government
- Territorial distribution by levels of government and revenue items (thousand euros and euros per capita):
- Direct taxes
- Indirect taxes
- Social Security contributions
- Transfers
- Other revenues
- Total revenue, excluding the funds transferred between the different levels of government
The main results of the database are analyzed in the book Las diferencias regionales del sector público español. This study was presented in November 2011.
