Abstract: During the crisis period, over 330,000 companies have been created in Spain per year, even though a larger number have been destroyed. Therefore, it is important to analyze the differences that exist in the rate of entrepreneurship per autonomous community by comparing the behavior of entrepreneurs during the periods of expansion (2000-2007) and crisis (2008-2011), as well as among firms of different sizes and sectors according to their technological intensity.
The results show the strong impact of the crisis on the rate of entrepreneurship in all the autonomous communities, but especially in those that traditionally are more enterprising. In addition, the period of crisis comes accompanied by an increase in the rate of entrepreneurship in sectors of low technological intensity which reflects an increase of entrepreneurship due to necessity and not due to technological opportunities.
