Ivie Seminar 2013
4Th Conference on the Spanish banking sector
Fundación Universidad-Empresa, Adeit
Plaza Virgen de la Paz, 3
46001 Valencia
Valencia, 28 February 2013
Objectives
The Spanish banking sector has experienced a profound transformation in recent years as a result of the changes needed to overcome the effects of the crisis. Since the crisis began over five years ago, more than a dozen Royal Decree-Laws (RDL) have been adopted that affect the regulation of the banking sector, with important measures such as the approval of the Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring (FROB), the reform of the savings banks law, the RDL for reinforcement of the financial system, the RDL for real estate and loan write-downs, etc. The need for recapitalization identified during the stress tests undertaken in 2012 forced the Government to request financial aid from the European Rescue Fund, which provided a capital injection of around 40 billion euros. Given the intensity of the crisis, part of the credit sector has been nationalized and some entities have been bailed out, the total amount of public aid granted ascending to 5.3% GDP. The demands posed by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to the bank bailout have established the roadmap followed in recent months (such as the creation of the Sareb [Spanish “Bad Bank”] and the reform of the savings banks law), which will condition the immediate future of the Spanish banking sector.
In this context, the 4th Conference on the Spanish banking sector has a double objective. On the one hand, to make a critical assessment of the restructuring process carried out and the possible pending challenges. On the other hand, to take a look at the future of the banking sector in a context marked by the deleveraging of the economy, regulatory changes (with higher capital and liquidity requirements), the delicate macroeconomic situation, the creation of the banking union and the conditions imposed by the MoU.
As on previous occasions, this 4th Conference will be attended by experts with wide experience in the banking sector belonging to universities, consulting firms, research services, business schools, as well as the banking association.
