Innovation and Strategy Program of the VLC/CAMPUS
The Universitat de València (UV), Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) are the sponsors of the VLC/CAMPUS International Campus of Excellence, a project funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.
Within the VLC/CAMPUS activities, the UV, UPV and CSIC have agreed to boost the Innovation and Strategy Program to help develop the open innovation model of the International Campus of Excellence through a series of "Workshops of Innovation and Strategy". The aim of these meetings is for the sponsors of the VLC/CAMPUS and the main socio-economic agents of the region to debate, reflect on, propose and promote alternative development strategies in an economy oriented towards the sustainability of the production model and quality of life.
Main objectives
Knowledge-based activities (KBA or ABACO) are the basis of the pattern of development Europe aims to reach and also the main challenge facing Spain and Valencia. Its consolidation is needed to carry out a structural change of the economy and to return to a path of sustainable growth. Momentum strategies based on ABACO are a key to the advancement of this new growth model.
Within the VLC/CAMPUS framework, the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Económicas (Ivie) leads the activities and development of the ABACO Observatory, a project created in close relationship with the VLC/CAMPUS Innovation and Strategy Program, which aims to generate rigorous and reliable information at a national and international level on knowledge-based activity trends.
The ABACO Observatory gathers information on different approaches to knowledge-based activities and provides an analysis of its evolution in Spain, including many international comparisons. Through various activities, the ABACO Observatory helps to build shared views on the challenges of developing a knowledge society and identifies the levers that help support smart-growth strategies. The objective of the workshop is to present and disseminate new results and valuable experiences in the development of ABACO. It aims also at the debate on the challenges that ABACO pose, both in the field of economic analysis as well as in policy making.
The questions guiding the three sessions of the workshop are:
- What is the importance of ABACO and their most recent developments? What are the main components of their relevance? What is the situation of Spain from an international perspective? Has the crisis affected the growth of ABACO?
- What are the lessons from the experiences of promoting ABACO in our environment? Where are the greatest opportunities and the greatest difficulties to promote them?
- What are the most significant barriers to the expansion of ABACO in private companies? What obstacles hamper the use of highly knowledge-based intangible assets in businesses, in particular the improvement of organizational capital?
The Workshop is aimed at researchers, analysts, ABACO related professionals and managers of public policies on education, research, innovation, new technologies and, in general, economic development.
