Objectives

Following the impact of the crisis, the Spanish banking sector has undergone a deep restructuring process consisting in the consolidation of the sector (reducing the number of competitors), a 23% reduction in the number of bank branches, a write-down equivalent to 25% of GDP, the improvement of bank capitalization, etc. The intensity of the crisis forced the government to nationalize part of the sector injecting 61,000 million euros from public funds and to request financial aid from the European funds.

As highlighted in the reviews carried out by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund of the financial assistance programme for Spain, the efforts carried out have resulted in a stronger, safer and more efficient banking system. However, those reports also indicate that there are major challenges pending that can slow down the pace of the sector’s recovery, with the consequences that this would have for their profitability. The weakness of the economic recovery, the scenario of low interest rates, the deleveraging process of the economy, the impact of regulatory changes, the new competitive environment in the context of the Banking Union, etc. are challenges that the Spanish banking sector will have to face and will determine its recovery of profitability.

In this context, this conference aims to review the restructuring process carried out to correct the imbalances accumulated in the previous expansion stage, and analyse the weaknesses that still exist and the challenges that the sector will face in the immediate future. To do this, as on previous occasions, the conference will bring together a group of experts including bank directors, researchers, academics and directors of institutions directly involved in the restructuring of the Spanish banking sector.

The conference is divided into two round table debates: one dedicated to the future of the sector after its rescue and another where the directors of two financial institutions which have actively participated in the restructuring of the sector will relate their experiences. In addition to an introductory session which will analyse the pending challenges, the closing conference by the Director-General of the FROB (Fund for Orderly Bank Restructuring) will review the progress of the bank restructuring in Spain.
