Abstract: This article analyzes the impact of financial digitalization on payment media in Spain. The figures suggest that in Spain, as in other countries, the impact of fintech payments is still limited. However, there has been an explicit recognition that fintech will play a key role in th e coming years. In particular, the European Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2) acknowledges and explicitly deals with the innovations linked to the digitalization of payments. The PSD2 considers that banks will still prevail as the main payment providers and will dominate a big deal of fintech innovations. Additionally, the article offers an estimation of the impact on fintech on currency use in Spain. Using the ratio «val ue of ATM withdrawal transactions/(card payment transactions + value of ATM withdrawal transactions) we estimate this ratio could go from 50 por 100 in 2015 to 47 por 100 in 2020, although fintech payments could imply a further reduction to 44 por 100.
