Human development in Spain: Material welfare

Abstract

Material welfare, the third indicator of human development along with education and health, provides information about individuals' access to economic resources. This note offers an overview of this aspect with data on GDP per capita in Spain: that is, its evolution during the twenty-first century, as well as regional and gender differences. The study of material welfare is completed with a description of income inequality, a dimension normally not included in the human development index. Data show that, compared to other countries and taking into account its income level, Spain has a moderate degree of inequality. However, in terms of regions, the Basque Country has the most equal distribution while the most unequal can be found in the Canary Islands. Information in this note comes from the study Human development in Spain: 1980-2007.
