Gender-related human development indices in Spain

Abstract

Gender-related human development indicators demonstrate that while education differences have decreased since the restoration of democracy in Spain, women have maintained greater longevity and men have maintained higher income per capita. This note takes an in-depth look at inequality between men and women found in traditional and alternative Gender Development Indices. Also provided are Human Development Indices differentiated by gender, thus allowing a more direct interpretation of the results.Traditional indices show that the difference in human development between men and women decreased considerably in Spain between 1980 and 2007. According to data provided by alternative indices, the Basque Country, Navarre and Madrid are among the regions with the most significant inequality in human development, while the eastern regions of the peninsula present less inequality.
