New Human Capital Series: a historical look

Abstract

Training has served more as a shield against unemployment in the current crisis than in that of 1994. Thus, in 2010 the unemployment rate of graduates with a vocational training (post-secondary) was 19.8%, while in 1994 it stood at 30.8%. This is one of the results in this issue which reviews almost half a century of data on the education level of Spain's population, provided in the Bancaja Foundation-Ivie Human Capital Series. The data show that significant progress was seen in education over the period 1964-2010, and the relation between increases in human capital and the decision to participate in the labor market is explored. Also shown is that the development of the Spanish economy has been linked to higher human capital requirements on the part of the productive system.
