The crisis and the labor market from a European perspective
Abstract
The economic crisis has hit hard (almost) all European economies, particularly, Spain. This issue seeks to explain this fact in the behavior of the Spanish labor market, comparing it to other European countries. Thus, especially Spanish young people are having a tough time, with unemployment rates near 50%. In addition, other negative features of the Spanish economy are the high rates of temporality and of over-education, although these conditions seem to have subsided since the beginning of the crisis. Another of the challenges facing the Spanish economy is the low weight of high-skilled occupations, still far from the average in Europe. The information in this note has been processed with the latest data available from Eurostat.
