Labor flexibility: the match between young people's preferences and reality

Abstract

According to note No.109 in the Human Capital Series, young people who prefer a flexible schedule and a post that is both undefined and challenging are those who make a greater contribution to their job in terms of innovation. This issue explores young people's attitudes regarding preferences for flexible schedules and how they view the job market and life in general. Young people who show a preference for flexible working hours are found to have a better perception of the labor market and are more satisfied with life on the whole. In addition, those who prefer being self-employed are less likely to leave work. Also provided in this note are the results on the match and mismatch between preferences and the actual reality of labor flexibility. So as to analyze this subject in more depth, the strength of these preferences is measured by the amount of monthly salary an individual would be willing to give up to maintain a certain flexibility.
